The Good Masters

The Good Masters were the elite slave-owning oligarchs who ruled the city of Astapor on Slaver's Bay. Their power and wealth derived entirely from the training and sale of Unsullied, eunuch slave soldiers renowned for their discipline and obedience. The Good Masters' methods were notoriously cruel: they selected the strongest slave boys, subjected them to years of brutal training designed to break their will, and ultimately required each recruit to kill a newborn slave infant—purchased from the same pens—as the final test of loyalty, thereby severing all human connection. This system produced soldiers who felt no pain, fear, or hesitation, and who obeyed any command without question. The Good Masters' authority was absolute within Astapor, and they maintained a monopoly on the Unsullied trade, which supplied armies across the Free Cities and beyond. Their regime was characterized by a rigid hierarchy, with the Good Masters at the top, controlling every aspect of life for the slave population. They were overthrown when Daenerys Targaryen, posing as a buyer, used her newly hatched dragon Drogon to burn the Good Masters and their representatives, freeing the Unsullied and turning them against their former masters. This act of liberation destroyed the Good Masters' power and marked the beginning of Daenerys's campaign to end slavery in Slaver's Bay. The Good Masters' legacy, however, persisted in the form of the Unsullied themselves, who became Daenerys's most loyal and effective soldiers, their training repurposed for her cause. The name "Good Masters" was a bitter irony, masking a system of unimaginable cruelty and exploitation.
